Maddux ties Clemens as Dodgers top Padres

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Casey Blake homered and scored two runs to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in the first of three games at Chavez Ravine.

Greg Maddux (7-11) got his first win in a Dodger uniform in two years and tied Roger Clemens for eighth all-time with 354 wins, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Jonathan Broxton pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save of the season.

"You don't like to compete against your friends, and I made some friends over there," Maddux said about beating his former team. "I just tried to stay in the game. You have to thank our bullpen, and they did a good job over the last four innings. (Clemens and I) pitch a lot alike, but he pitched faster. I wish him the best. I've always considered him the best in the game."

Manny Ramirez went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run batted in and James Loney added two hits for Los Angeles, which has won three straight after losing eight in a row.

"(Maddux) was in command and we had good baserunning," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "We understand we need to be aggressive. A lot of good things happened tonight."

The Dodgers, coupled with a Diamondbacks victory earlier Monday, remained 2 1/2 games behind Arizona for the NL West lead.

Adrian Gonzalez had a double and scored a run and Kevin Kouzmanoff drove in a run as the Padres snapped their two-game winning streak.

Chris Young (4-5) made his first appearance since August 10, throwing five innings and giving up four runs and six hits while striking out three and walking three.

Brian Giles, Luis Rodriguez and Kouzmanoff started the first inning with three consecutive singles off Maddux to give the Padres an early 1-0 lead.

The Dodgers tied it up in the home first. Andre Ethier drew a one-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on Nick Hundley's throwing error and scored on Loney's RBI single.

Los Angeles took the lead in the second. Blake led off with a single, stole second and scored on Angel Berroa's RBI double. Maddux followed by helping his own cause with an RBI single to plate Berroa.

The Dodgers took a 4-1 lead in the third on Blake's one-out solo homer off Young.

The Padres put together a two-out rally in the sixth. Gonzalez and Chase Headley hit back-to-back doubles off Maddux to cut the deficit to two.

The Dodgers padded their lead in the seventh. Russell Martin and Andre Ethier each singled to put runners on the corners. Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to give Los Angeles a 5-2 lead.
